The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum opened on October 8, 1992 to house one of the best and most prestigious private collections in the world. Shaped in the Thyssen-Bornemisza family, this collection was acquired by the Spanish State in July 1993 and covers a chronological period that spans from the end of the 13th century to the eighties of the 20th century. The Permanent Collection is the one we will see; it is distributed over three floors with a suggested route that begins on the second floor with medieval painting. The visit begins with medieval Italians and continues with Renaissance and Baroque manifestations. In the initial rooms of the first floor, the Dutch school is extended, which is grouped into scenes of daily life and landscapes, ending with still lifes. Modern Painting begins in room 29 with two galleries dedicated to 19th century North American art, to continue with German Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and Expressionism. The ground floor is reserved for the 20th century, where there are outstanding representations of works belonging to Cubism, abstraction, surrealism, pop art or figuration in the European post-war period. It is the only museum in Madrid with such a long chronological axis. IMPORTANT: -This museum rotates a lot of works, it is possible that masterpieces you want to see are not in the permanent collection due to loans to other galleries or are under restoration. -The Carmen Thyssen Collection is not included in the explanations, but customers can see it on their own, there are days when it may be closed.
