At three in the morning on 16 June 1735 a tired 28-year-old Swede stepped off a boat at the Vischpoort. Carl Linnaeus defended his thesis on 23 June and was back on a boat to Amsterdam the next morning with a diploma, a gold ring and a silk cap. Seven days in total. Harderwijk sold degrees much the way it sold fish, and a local rhyme said so out loud. This walk follows his route past the fish market, the wall that held back the Zuiderzee, and the church whose tower came down in the storm of 1797. Nine stops.
