Then its harbour silted up, trade moved north, and the city did something remarkable, it stood still. Ten stops through an intact Golden Age centre where more than 360 national heritage buildings still line streets that have barely changed in three centuries, and where the greatest open-air museum in the country was built from what the city refused to let go.
