Budapest Heritage Walk: Courtyards, Memory and Night, Self-Guided App Tour
48 minutes

About this experience
District VII is built around courtyards, and the same yards carry both the grief and the nightlife. The walk begins at the Dohány Street Synagogue, the largest in Europe, and the garden behind it, which covers mass graves from the ghetto winter of 1944. On Dob utca a bronze figure reaches down from the wall where a ghetto gate once stood, for the Swiss diplomat Carl Lutz. After that the yards change use: the linked passages of Gozsdu, the Orthodox synagogue on Kazinczy, then Szimpla Kert, the crumbling block that started the ruin bars. Twelve stops, about 2.2 km.
