About this experience
Between 1897 and 1912 Vienna had a public argument about ornament, and the buildings on both sides are still standing. It starts at the Secession, under the dome of gilded laurel that locals call the golden cabbage. Along the Wienzeile, Otto Wagner tiled a whole façade in roses at the Majolikahaus and put gilded sunflowers on a pair of transit pavilions at Karlsplatz. It ends at Michaelerplatz, where Adolf Loos set green marble columns under bare plaster and flower boxes were added to soften what imperial eyes found naked. Twelve stops, about 3.5 km.
