These mills kept the polder dry, lifting water about a metre and a half into a boezem when a wet week would have drowned the fields. The walk starts at the Wisboomgemaal, steam first then electricity, and follows the brick octagons of the Nederwaard, built in 1738 with kitchens the size of a cupboard. Across the water the Overwaard mills stand in thatch, light enough for peat that would not carry brick. De Blokker is a wip mill, the oldest shape here, on a plot that held a mill in the sixteenth century. Ten stops, about 1.8 km.
