Florence Historic Center: Duomo, Piazza della Signoria & Ponte Vecchio | Self-Guided Audio Walk
1 hour and 30 minutes

About this experience
In 1452 Florence's cloth merchants gave a new pair of bronze doors the place of honour, facing the cathedral, because of their beauty. This walk is about that habit: Florence built the Renaissance, then kept choosing what to show. Meet Brunelleschi and the rival he had to share the dome with, the Medici duke who walled up his palace's public corner, and Dante, sentenced to be burned. See where the old market and the ghetto were cleared in the 1880s and 1890s, which statues are copies, and where the originals went. 12 stops on one line of about 1.8 km, from San Lorenzo past the Medici palace, the Baptistery and the Duomo, through Dante's quarter and Piazza della Repubblica to Piazza della Signoria, the Uffizi and the Ponte Vecchio. Self-guided audio, about 90 minutes at your own pace, with every stop free to see from the street.

The tour then opens in your phone browser, with no app to download. Bring a charged phone and earphones. Mobile data helps; if you have none, open the tour on wifi before you set off. Best time: Early morning, before about nine, is the calmest time on this route: by late morning the cathedral square, Piazza della Signoria and the Ponte Vecchio are crowded, and they stay busy until evening. The last hour of daylight is lovely on the river. Every stop is outdoors and free, so the walk works at any hour of daylight; spring and autumn are gentler than midsummer, when the stone streets hold the heat. Checked 23 September 2026: entry to the cathedral itself is free; the dome climb, the Baptistery interior, the bell tower and the cathedral museum need a pass from the official Duomo site, and dome slots are timed and often sold out weeks ahead. The original Gates of Paradise are in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, behind the cathedral, together with the original north doors and much of the cathedral's sculpture. Checked 23 September 2026: the Palazzo Medici Riccardi museum (Chapel of the Magi) is entered from Via de' Ginori 2 since 27 August 2026 and is closed on Wednesdays. Checked 23 September 2026: the Orsanmichele church and the museum of original statues upstairs cost 10 euros; opening days vary by source, so check the Bargello museums' site before you go. Michelangelo's original David is in the Galleria dell'Accademia, about ten minutes' walk north of the cathedral. Tacca's original boar is in the Museo Stefano Bardini across the river. Checked 23 September 2026: the Vasari Corridor can only be visited with an Uffizi ticket plus a timed supplement, booked in advance. The walk ends at the Ponte Vecchio, where the Oltrarno tour begins across the river at Santo Spirito. The historic center is a limited-traffic zone, not a car-free one: taxis, delivery vans, bicycles and electric buses still use many of these streets, so keep to the side in the narrow lanes. The cathedral square, Piazza della Signoria and the Ponte Vecchio are crowded most of the day. Keep your bag closed and your phone in hand. Attaching padlocks to the Ponte Vecchio is forbidden and fined. Checked 23 September 2026: the Ponte Vecchio is in a staged conservation programme begun in 2026; the bridge stays open, but expect works on the piers, the paving or the arches.
