Galata Tower Self-Guided Audio Walk: Galata Bridge, Istiklal Avenue and Taksim Square
1 hour and 30 minutes

About this experience
Across the Golden Horn from the old city rises Galata, the hill the Byzantines called the other side. The Genoese walled it and crowned it with a tower; bankers, embassies and theaters followed, and fire kept clearing the ground for them. Start on the two-deck Galata Bridge, walk the old bankers' street to a bank with two faces, climb the Camondo Stairs to Galata Tower and go up past the gate of the city's oldest Mevlevi lodge. Then follow Istiklal Avenue along the ridge: a palace behind its forecourt, a church rebuilt for a tram line, the school gate where the great fire of 1870 stopped, the Flower Passage and a mosque older than the street. End at Taksim's stone water house. Eleven stops, about 2.4 km and 90 minutes, in English and at your own pace. Uphill at first, with stairs. Entry to Galata Tower and the Mevlevi Lodge is not included.

Please note
To start the tour, enter the ticket code from your confirmation on the Roamer redemption page linked there. Do this before you set off, while you still have signal. The tour then opens in your phone browser, with no app to download. Bring a charged phone and earphones. Mobile data helps; if you have none, open the tour on wifi before you set off. Best time: Tuesday to Sunday, in the morning: the Galata Mevlevi Lodge, SALT Galata and the Republic Museum at Taksim are all closed on Mondays, and the tower's queue and Istiklal's crowds build through the day. Istiklal is at its busiest in the evenings and at weekends. Avoid 1 May and late June, when the police can close Taksim and the avenue. Getting to the start: take the T1 tram to Karakoy, or to Eminonu at the other end of the bridge, or a ferry to Karakoy or Eminonu pier. The T1 runs from 06:00 to midnight, every 2 minutes at peak (Metro Istanbul, checked 5 October 2026). The first stop is on the Galata Bridge's upper deck, on the sidewalk facing up the Golden Horn, near the Karakoy end: if you start at Eminonu, simply walk across. Galata Tower: 30 euros for foreign visitors, open every day from 08:30 into the late evening, last entry 22:00; MuzeKart is valid for Turkish citizens only; under-18s must come with a parent. Expect a queue. Checked 5 October 2026. Galata Mevlevi Lodge Museum: 7 euros for foreign visitors, Tuesday to Sunday 09:00 to 18:30, ticket office closes 17:30, closed on Mondays. There is no official public schedule for the sema (the whirling ceremony): ask the museum before you plan around one. Checked 5 October 2026. SALT Galata, in the old Ottoman Bank at stop 2, is free: Tuesday to Saturday 11:00 to 19:00, Sunday 11:00 to 18:00, closed on Mondays, on the first two days of both Eids, on 1 January and on 1 May. Checked 5 October 2026. The Republic Museum in the Taksim water house: Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00, ticket office closes 17:30, closed on Mondays; 570 lira for foreign visitors, cards only; free under 10 and over 65. Checked 5 October 2026. Can't manage stairs at the underpass? At the end of the bridge, cross Tersane Caddesi on the zebra crossing just to the left instead. It has no lights, so wait for a clear gap. The Camondo Stairs that follow have no step-free alternative on the route. Aya Triada: from Taksim, go back to the top of Istiklal and a short way down Meselik Sokagi, on the avenue's south side, to the church's garden gate for the full view of its front and towers. Its opening hours are not officially published. Saint Anthony of Padua and the Aga Camii are free. The church is usually open outside Mass; the mosque is open outside prayer times, with modest dress and shoes off. The walk ends on Taksim Square, by the M2 metro and the F1 funicular down to Kabatas. To go back down to Karakoy, the Tunel funicular leaves from Tunel Square, at the bottom of Istiklal. The route is not step-free: stairs down into and up out of the Karakoy underpass, about forty steps on the Camondo Stairs (with a handrail), and the steep cobbles of Galip Dede Caddesi. On the Galata Bridge, fishermen cast lines and hooks over the sidewalk: watch your head and your step. The bridge can close to pedestrians as well as cars from 01:30 to 04:30 on maintenance nights (as in August 2025). The Karakoy underpass was renovated in 2024, but its opening hours are not published: walk it by day. On Istiklal the red tram runs down the middle of the avenue every few minutes: stay at the edges, where the stops are, and watch for it. Galata Mevlevi Lodge Museum: check the official page before you go; it has closed for whole weeks without notice, most recently 29 September to 5 October 2026. Checked 5 October 2026. Taksim, Istiklal and the transport around them can be sealed on 1 May (in 2026 the square was closed from 05:00, Taksim and Sishane metro stations were shut, and the Tunel and the Istiklal tram were suspended) and around Pride in late June (on 21 June 2026 barriers went up around Taksim, Istiklal down to Tunel Square and Karakoy). In August 2024 the Turkish press reported visible cracks in the Cicek Pasaji's walls and ceiling and a stalled restoration; no later update was found. The stop works from the street. The Russian consulate is closed to visitors and may have crowd barriers and security in front: keep to the avenue and be discreet with cameras. Galip Dede Caddesi, the tower square and Istiklal are very crowded: keep bags closed and in front of you. Public transportation nearby
