Cuenca Barranco Self-Guided Audio Walk: Panama Hat Museum, Calle Larga, Puente Roto and Pumapungo
1 hour and 20 minutes

About this experience
Cuenca's old town ends at a cliff, the barranco, with the river Tomebamba at its foot. This walk reads that edge from top to bottom, from the old ford to Inca ground. Start at the Cruz del Vado, where the old road climbed up from the river, and follow Calle Larga along the top of the cliff: a street named for a French scientist who came to measure the Earth, the Panama hat museum, and a poet's house with a new face in brick. Then go down the great stair to the river, walk the bank where the flood of 1950 swept away bridge after bridge in a night, and stand under the Puente Roto, the half bridge it left. Climb to the Todos Santos mills and end at Pumapungo, the Puma Gate. Ten stops, about 1.8 km and 80 minutes, in English or Spanish, at your own pace. Mostly downhill, with two stairways. Museum entry is not included; Pumapungo is free and closed on Mondays.

To start the tour, enter the ticket code from your confirmation on the Roamer redemption page linked there. Do this before you set off, while you still have signal. The tour then opens in your phone browser, with no app to download. Bring a charged phone and earphones. Mobile data helps; if you have none, open the tour on wifi before you set off. Best time: Tuesday to Saturday, from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, so the hat museum, the city museum and Pumapungo are all open: Pumapungo is closed on Mondays, and on Sundays the hat museum closes at 15:00 and Pumapungo at 16:00. Walk it in daylight; the riverside path and the Puente Roto plaza empty after dark. Checked 5 October 2026. Getting to the start: take a taxi to the Cruz del Vado, at Calle La Condamine and the Bajada del Vado, or walk 10 to 15 minutes south from Parque Calderon. The tram does not run past the route. The walk ends at Pumapungo, on the corner of Calle Larga and Avenida Huayna Capac, where there are taxis and buses. Museo del Sombrero (hat museum, stop 3): one dollar, 50 cents for students; Monday to Friday 09:00 to 18:30, Saturday 09:00 to 17:00, Sunday 09:00 to 15:00. Checked 5 October 2026. Museo Remigio Crespo Toral (stop 5): free; Monday to Friday 09:00 to 16:45, Saturday, Sunday and holidays 09:00 to 17:00. Checked 5 October 2026. CIDAP, the Inter-American Center of Crafts and Folk Arts, is at the foot of the Escalinata on the riverside: free, Monday to Friday 08:00 to 17:00, Saturday 08:00 to 16:30. Checked 5 October 2026. Museo Pumapungo and its Inca terraces (stop 10): free; Tuesday to Friday 08:00 to 17:00, weekends and holidays 10:00 to 16:00, closed on Mondays. Allow at least an hour. Checked 5 October 2026. Need to avoid stairs? Stay on Calle Larga past the Escalinata as far as Todos Santos and go down the Bajada de Todos Santos to stop 9. You miss the river path and the Puente Roto plaza (stops 7 and 8). The Oblate sisters' wood-fired oven at Todos Santos now bakes for the Santo Pan bakery in the Todos Santos neighborhood, near stop 8. The route is not step-free: the Escalinata down to the river (a wheelchair lift was installed in 2024, but whether it is running on a given day is not confirmed) and 19 steps with a handrail up from the Puente Roto plaza. The Bajada de Todos Santos and the Bajada de los Molinos carry fast downhill traffic: keep to the pavements, and cross the Bajada de Todos Santos with care where you can see both ways, at the foot of the long stone stairway that comes down to it; there are no lights or markings there. The pavements on Calle Larga are narrow in places, and the side-street crossings are busy: use the lights where there are any. Cuenca is about 2,500 m above sea level. Take the stairs slowly and carry water. The Museo Manuel Agustin Landivar above the Todos Santos ruins has opened only partially in recent years; do not count on getting in. Works can close a stair or a lane; a rehabilitation of a Pasaje Hermano Miguel was planned for 2026. Follow the signs. Checked 5 October 2026. Public transportation nearby
