Shinjuku Gyoen Self-Guided Audio Walk: Cherry Ponds, French Garden and Taiwan Pavilion
1 hour and 30 minutes

About this experience
Shinjuku Gyoen is fifty-eight walled hectares of central Tokyo, and most visitors see only the lawn by their gate. This self-guided audio walk takes you round all of it in one ring of about 2.7 km and twelve stops, at your own pace, with no group and no fixed start time. Start at whichever gate you arrive at. The walk begins at the first stop you reach and carries you round until you are back where you started. Two more play inside the greenhouse. The story follows the water first: the Tamagawa aqueduct of 1653, the Naito lords' pond garden of 1772, the 1872 farm laboratory that planted Japan's first plane and tulip trees, and the French garden made for the emperor in 1906. Then the cherries, about 900 trees of some 70 varieties flowering from January to late April. Admission to the garden is not included (500 yen for adults in 2026). The garden is closed on Mondays except in cherry season and early November. Not affiliated with the Ministry of the Environment or Shinjuku Gyoen.

Please note
To start the tour, enter the ticket code from your confirmation on the Roamer redemption page linked there. Do this before you set off, while you still have signal. The tour then opens in your phone browser, with no app to download. Bring a charged phone and earphones. Mobile data helps; if you have none, open the tour on wifi before you set off. Best time: Any open day, in any season: the garden changes all year and every stop is written for whatever it is wearing. Mornings are quietest. Cherries flower in turn from January to late April, the chrysanthemum exhibition runs 1 to 15 November, and the planes and maples colour in late autumn. The ring is a suggestion: start at your gate, cut across, double back. Each story plays when you reach it, in any order. The two greenhouse stories play when you tap them, once you are inside. Shinjuku Gate is nearest Shinjuku-gyoemmae station, Okido Gate is nearest its other exit, and Sendagaya Gate is nearest JR Sendagaya. From late March to April, check the Ministry of the Environment's site before you go: busy days may need an advance booking. Admission is not included: the garden charges 500 yen for adults (2026), payable at the gate. The garden is closed on Mondays (except in cherry season and 1 to 15 November) and from 29 December to 3 January. Alcohol, drones, pets and bicycles are not allowed inside the garden. The garden closes at 16:30 from October to mid-March, with last entry at 16:00. Public transportation nearby
