Barcelona Gothic Quarter Self-Guided Audio Walk: Cathedral, Roman Walls and Plaça Reial

About this experience

Barcelona began as a small Roman town, and its Gothic Quarter is three cities stacked in one: the Roman colony, the royal city of the Middle Ages, and a 20th-century remake that made the old town look even older. Start at the Roman gate on Plaça Nova, stand before the Cathedral's front, see a royal chapel standing on a Roman tower, and step into the King's Square. Find four columns of the Temple of Augustus, free to see in a courtyard during opening hours, the two governments of Plaça de Sant Jaume, and the Pont del Bisbe, built in 1928. Pause at Sant Felip Neri, scarred by the 1938 bombing, walk the lanes of El Call, the medieval Jewish quarter, and reach Santa Maria del Pi, La Rambla and Plaça Reial with Gaudí's lampposts. Twelve stops, about 1.8 km and 75 minutes, flat, at your own pace, in English. Entry to the Cathedral, Santa Maria del Pi and the city history museum is not included; the Temple of Augustus is free.

Best time: A weekday morning, Tuesday to Saturday. Carrer del Bisbe and the Pont del Bisbe are quietest early, before about 10am; mid-morning they are a crowd. The MUHBA sites (Plaça del Rei and El Call) are closed on Mondays, and the Temple of Augustus opens only from 10am to 2pm on Mondays (other days 10am to 7pm, Sundays to 8pm). Plaça Reial is at its liveliest in the evening. Checked 12 October 2026. Getting to the start: Plaça Nova is about 300 metres from Jaume I Metro (L4), along Carrer de la Tapineria and Baixada de la Llibreteria. Liceu (L3), Urquinaona (L1, L4) and Catalunya (L1, L3, plus FGC and Rodalies trains) are all within about 500 metres. The walk ends about 235 metres from Liceu (L3). Temple of Augustus (stop 5, Carrer del Paradís 10): free entry, no staff. Monday 10:00 to 14:00, Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 19:00, Sunday 10:00 to 20:00; last entry 30 minutes before closing; closed 1 January, 1 May, 24 June and 25 December. Checked 12 October 2026 (MUHBA hours from 1 August 2026). MUHBA Plaça del Rei (stop 4), the Roman town under the square: Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 19:00, Sunday 10:00 to 20:00, closed Mondays; last entry 45 minutes before closing. Free on the first Sunday of the month and on Sundays from 15:00. Checked 12 October 2026. MUHBA El Call center (stop 9, Placeta de Manuel Ribé): Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday 10:00 to 14:00; Friday and Saturday 10:00 to 15:00 and 16:00 to 19:00; closed Mondays. Ticketed, free on the first Sunday of the month and on Sundays from 15:00. Checked 12 October 2026. Palau de la Generalitat (stop 6): free guided visits on the second and fourth weekends of each month except August, booked in advance; open days on Sant Jordi (23 April), the Diada (11 September) and at Christmas. Checked 12 October 2026. Barcelona city hall (stop 6): free Sunday visits, guided and self-guided, except on public holidays; there is no visit on Sunday 25 October 2026. Checked 12 October 2026. The Cathedral (stop 2) and Santa Maria del Pi (stop 10) are ticketed; prices and hours are on those stops' cards. The Cathedral's step-free entrance is the Santa Eulàlia door on Carrer del Bisbe. The whole walk is flat and step-free, on stone paving and setts. La Rambla (stops 11 and 12) is under works until early 2027: expect fencing, narrowed pavements and one-way uphill traffic in the side lanes. Stay on the building-side pavement as the route does. Checked 12 October 2026. Between stops 11 and 12 the route crosses the mouth of Carrer de Ferran at a light-controlled crossing; wait for the green. Pickpockets work the crowds on La Rambla, at Plaça Nova and in front of the Cathedral, and street sellers gather on the Cathedral square. Keep bags closed and in front of you. Carrer de la Tapineria, Baixada de la Llibreteria and Carrer del Cardenal Casañas are shared streets where delivery vans pass: keep to the side. Plaça del Rei is a dead end; leave by the corner you came in at. Do not cut through the courtyard of the palace on its far side. Plaça de Sant Felip Neri has a school on it, and the lanes of El Call are homes: keep your voice down and never go into doorways or courtyards. Plaça de Sant Jaume can be closed for events or demonstrations; follow police directions and rejoin the route at Carrer del Bisbe. Plaça Reial is busy late at night, with bars and some street hustle; keep your belongings close. Public transportation nearby
